Joe Torre won’t have any problem getting in the Hall of Fame as a manager. When that happens, an excellent playing career will likely be forgotten (much like what has happened to Al Spalding). Torre is a man without a position. He caught more than he played anywhere else, but he only caught 41% of his career games (36% at first base and 23% at third base). For this reason, he doesn’t often receive extra credit for being a catcher (which catchers definitely need). Hall Rating gives him only some credit—for the games he actually did catch. If you don’t give Torre any credit for catching at all, his Hall Rating of 111 drops to 100 (right on the Hall of Stats borderline).
